AUGUST 1st 2008

In response to the July 31st entry below, the website received the following communication from local resident Bob English:

About Davidstow community Wind
Back in 2007 Davidstow found out that a company Calling itself Community Wind had posted a page on its web site about a project called Davidstow Community wind , Nobody in Davidstow had any idea what this was about as the company had not to our knowledge contacted any locals accept obviously some land owners. The original plan was for 20 turbines on the old airfield and in the woods near Crowdy Reservoir. The company held an information day at Camelford School but still did not contact Davidstow. Eventually the company wrote to the parish council asking for a meeting but the company did not respond when the Parish council said it would have to be a public meeting. Later they had their first information day at Tremail but still did not take the opportunity to meet the parish council at the monthly meeting the day before ,the company did however have a lively reception from local people .
In the autumn a meeting was held in Camelford to form a group to appose the development, over 200 people attended and from this the group Stop Turbines In North Cornwall was born e.g. STINC. Later Community wind changed their plans for turbines on the old airfield when they found out that they could not build on common ground although they say it was to move away from some houses. Community Wind came to Tremail again to show their new plan’s and on this occasion the press were there and the BBC’s Politics show turned up do a piece for their Sunday show, again the company had a very lively reception.
The wind farm if built would site 20 126 metre turbines in Davidstow woods and farm land to the side of Crowdy reservoir an area where many types of birds come to nest and feed , especially the millions of starlings that visit ever winter. Building this wind farm at an altitude of 300 metres will mean that the turbines will be at the height of the near by Tors of Bodmin Moor. Most of the land around is marshy and has a top layer of peat, this will be severely damaged in the construction phase of the wind farm and may permanently affect the hydrology of the area which is part of Bodmin Moors eco system.
Community wind will ruin our Moorland with their wind farm. they are just here to make money e.g. about £11 million a year , The offer of a few electricity vouchers and a low energy light bulb shop in Camelford will not justify taking part of Bodmin moor and turning it into an industrial landscape.
The company try to give the impression that their wind farm is a community project by high jacking the name Davidstow .They show a picture of the 80 metre mast at the milk factory side of the airfield, If you stand at the mast and look towards the Tors , imagine twenty of those 80 metre mast with 90 metre rotor blades in the woodland in front of you, that is the real picture. Of course the Tors will not be visible anymore and remember the trees are only between 8 and 15 metres tall .
you can go to www.stinc.co.uk for facts about wind power and details of how to object to this wind farm.

The website received the following information from'Community Windpower Limited':

DAVIDSTOW COMMUNITY WINDFARM – UPDATED PROPOSAL
Following community consultation, Community Windpower Ltd have re-designed their windfarm proposal planned for Davidstow Woods.
In response to concerns raised by the local community, the proposed 20 turbines now lie solely within Davidstow Woods and farmland to the south; it no longer occupies Davidstow Airfield to the north of the site.
In addition, the proposed Community, Economic, Educational and Environmental benefits which the development would bring have been revised and now incorporate the creation of 5 new jobs, over £35 million investment for the local area and the provision of the remaining 50% of Cornwall’s 2010 renewable energy target through this one development, as it would be capable of generating up to 50MW of electricity.

LOCAL GROUPS

STINC - Stop Turbines In North Cornwall

About STINC

We represent a growing number of local people who are seriously worried about the new wind developments currently being proposed for Davidstow, Hendraburnick, Otterham and the repowering of Delabole and are committed to stopping the construction of these and any further wind farms in North Cornwall.

The group was formed at a public meeting of about 200 residents on 13th August 2007 at Clease Hall, Camelford. All of the committee members are local residents and are working for the group as volunteers.

At first the proposal for the turbines at Davidstow Moor was the most pressing concern for most people, however we quickly learned from wind farm proliferation in other parts of the country, especially Scotland, that this area is extremely vunerable to pressure from wind energy companies. So even if we did prevent the development on Davidstow Moor there is nothing stopping another windfarm company re-applying in the future, and we could also be hit by a new proposal for a new site a couple of miles down the road. Bodmin Moor is not a national park and so has no protection from these threats
